About Us

In 2005, with the help of the local NGO (Non-Government Organisation) SEFCA, Hope Guatemala was set up to improve the situation of the impoverished indigenous peoples of Guatemala, the Mayas..

We are a totally NON-PROFIT registered charity who began to raise money for urgently needed basic tools and seeds for a Cooperative in Santiago, Sac. The situation in Guatemala deteriorated dramatically in October 2005. Hurricane Stan devastated parts of the country, killed hundreds and made thousands homeless. Farms and villages were wiped out by landslides. People were threatened by starvation. We extended our support and established with friends a sister charity 'Nuevo Dia' in Germany. Jointly we succeeded in raising sufficient money to deliver food to 500 people for some months, to buy seeds and animals, to rebuild a farm and to help construct 17 houses in the department of San Marcos (near the Mexican border). However we soon recognized that our means and voluntary engagement were limited - that we could not help everywhere in the country. For this reason we decided in 2007 to concentrate our efforts, to help form a hopeful future for one community, the Village of Raxnam, Alta Verapaz.

Since then we have again grown. As well as working with SEFCA we also work with another grassroots NGO called Asecsa who are based in Chimaltenango, Guatemala. With the help of Asecsa we have set up health and nutrition centres in which we feed 50 children twice daily through our Child Sponsorship Scheme. Asecsa also organise meetings for us with the heads of local communities to discuss first-hand the projects that they are in most need of help with. Over the years this has varied form Health Centres to access to water and midwifery.

We still maintain a strong and important connection with SEFCA. Through them we help train, school and provide the essential practical needs children need to flourish within their communities. See our Projects & Achievements section for more information on our projects.
